Master Programme New Performative Practices 120 hp

The Master Programme ”New Performative Practices” comprises two years of advanced studies. It is a preparatory course for research, which qualifies the student for a Master of Fine Arts (MA) in choreography with specialization in one of the disciplines circus, dance or choreography.

Artistic development demands the courage to break with common practices, to constructively question established methods. New Performative Practices give rise to art that challenges the commonplace. The programme is interdisciplinary, aimed primarily at artists within circus, dance or choreography. It is designed for those interested in different performative practices and their development in interaction with the formation of new ideas for the production of art. The programme has a distinct focus on individual artistic development, including the promotion of new forms for organisation and work in practice on different artistic platforms from the perspective of choreography.

The Master Programme is a road to deepened and expanded knowledge, both about the artists needs for a successful career, but also about society’s demands, understanding and respect for artistic practice. The programme adds to the development of ideas about the business and market aspects of art. What is produced for whom and why? Creativity and knowledge are the pillars on which the new economies rest; the dialogue between artistic and business activities will therefore develop to the benefit of both.

You apply to the programme with a project. Your background can be as a performer – dancer, choreographer or circus artist – or as an artist with another professional relationship to performativity. All courses are related to and studied through your project. That project is the basis for two years of in-depth studies with some compulsory courses and some optional. Several of the programme courses are open for external applicants which adds to the critical mass for discussion and reflection. To guarantee a top-level education, the programme cooperates with other seats of learning and artistic fora, nationally and internationally. Linked to the head of the programme are the dancer Chrysa Parkinson and the choreographer/dancer Tilman O'Donnell. Chrysa and Tilman acts as advisors in matters relating to programme's content and artistic direction.

During the first year at the master programme the student will meet Chrysa Parkinsson, Cecilia Roos, Lena Hammergren, Mette Ingvartsen, Hinrich Sachs, Johan Widén, André Lepecki, Cristina Caprioli, Camilla Damkjaer, Jon Paul Zaccharini, Anna Koch, Rolf Hughes, Leif Elggren, Christer Lundahl, Martina Seitl, Melati Suryodarmo, Poste Restante/Erik Berg and Linn Hilda Lamberg.

Advisors of the programme: Chrysa Parkinson and Tilman O'Donnell

Please observe that artists with a circus competence are welcome to apply at the start of the programme, autumn of 2011, but DOCH will not develop circus specific profiled courses until the autumn 2013.
