Circus is a bricolage of diverse acts. In my research I use a range of diverse theorists to produce a psychoanalytic phenomenology of the circus subject as distinct from the object/artefact they may produce. From this phenomenology of what their world contains and with what psychic material they construct that world, I develop the methodology of psychoanalytic circotherapy that aims at facilitating the shift from a symptomal production – beset with symptoms and compulsive repetitions – to an artistic production as symptomatology. Following Deleuze’s intuition that the greatest artists are clinicians, circotherapy assists in the transition from circus as therapy for the artist to the artist as therapist for the spectator.
